The Benefits of Virtual Reality in Bars

By Nick Dimatteo, Fortyfivegames

Growing up in the ‘80s, many Saturday mornings included me watching The Jetsons over a bowl of neon-colored, sugar infused cereal (prize inside the box!). The Jetsons were a space-age nuclear family with some pretty amazing inventions and technological wonders at their disposal.

I could only imagine a world where you could actually see the people you were on the phone with and have conversations with the family robot. The paper thin TV the family had looked nothing like the colossal cabinet console that sat flat on the floor in my living room. For a Gen X kid like me, virtual reality (VR) is just a little bit like being in my own episode of The Jetsons.

I’m still waiting for my hoverpack, but VR is pretty close in excitement.

The Future of Bar Entertainment is VR

Virtual reality is currently one of the most innovative and exciting advancements for the bar and restaurant industry. Virtual reality in bars offers a unique experience that can attract new customers, retain existing ones and differentiate a business from its competitors.

In recent years, VR has become increasingly popular, and it has been applied to various fields, including the entertainment industry. Entertainment is an important component of the bar experience, so it is only logical that savvy bar owners will look to find ways to bring VR into their venues.

Building Immersive Experiences with VR

One way VR can be utilized in a bar or restaurant is to create immersive experiences. VR could be incorporated into the existing theme or feel of the bar by enhancing the vibe the owner is going for.

Likewise, the technology could also be used to transform the atmosphere of the bar, allowing customers to experience a different environment while enjoying their drinks.

VR could then have interesting applications when it comes to things like theme-nights or holiday seasons. Without a decorating makeover, VR would allow countless possibilities for modifying an existence structure to reflect a particular locale or experience. Through the magic of VR, a venue could become an Irish pub, a polar landscape or a haunted castle.

Kevin Williams of KWP, a specialist in immersive and social entertainment tech and facility development, spoke on the power of VR to build immersive experiences.

“VR is more than what some see as just the headset or goofy googles, but is the painting of the environment with digital light allowing immersive environments to be presented to the user either through headset, projection or new display technology,” Williams said.

Incorporate other sensory aspects, such as sound, temperature, or smell and the possibilities are not just endless but also uniquely authentic.

Use VR to Boost Your Bar’s Gaming and Entertainment Capabilities

In addition, VR technology can also be used to provide interactive games and activities for customers.

For example, patrons can play virtual games such as darts or pool, which are projected onto a surface. This can create a unique and entertaining experience for customers, which could attract more business to the bar.

Patrons may be skeptical of VR equipment in the home, so the option to come and enjoy well maintained professional-grade equipment might be enough to draw them into an establishment. If the guest finds the experience enjoyable, it is likely they will see value in planning return visits.

Enhance Your Guests’ Social Experience

Moreover, VR technology has the potential to enhance the social experience at bars. Williams commented on the social aspects of VR in the bar and restaurant space.

“The explosion in immersive technology for hospitality has seen the growth of the new trend in competitive socializing, with new location-based entertainment (LBE) venues being rolled out to offer a better entertainment and social mix.”

For instance, customers can participate in virtual group activities or challenges, which can foster a sense of community among patrons. This can be especially beneficial for guests who are shy or introverted, as it can provide them with an opportunity to interact with others in a fun and engaging way.

Additionally, VR technology can be used to create a more personalized experience for customers. For example, customers can create avatars or profiles within the VR environment, which can be customized to reflect their interests and preferences. This can make your guests feel more connected to the bar and encourage them to return in the future.

Transforming the Bar and Restaurant Experience

Overall, VR technology has the potential to transform the bar experience for guests. By creating immersive virtual environments and providing interactive games and activities, bars can attract more customers and provide a unique and entertaining experience.

Additionally, VR technology can enhance the social experience at bars by fostering a sense of community and providing a personalized experience for customers. As VR technology continues to evolve, it is likely that we will see more bars and other entertainment venues incorporating this technology into their offerings.

Beyond the benefits for patrons, VR technology can be used for staff training, providing a safe and controlled environment for employees to practice their skills and learn new ones. On training possibilities, Williams said, “The use of VR allows the simulation of tasks and activities within a facility and promotes through a simulation of the activity best practices. What some have dubbed ‘gamification’ of training, the immersion of these training applications offers a much more compelling experience which stays longer with the user.” This can result in more efficient and effective staff, leading to improved service quality and customer experience.

VR and Restaurant Marketing

Finally, VR technology can also be utilized for marketing and sales purposes, allowing bars to promote their products and services in novel ways which are more engaging and interactive than ever.

Overall, the utilization of VR technology in bars can provide various benefits that can enhance the overall bar experience for both customers and staff. Some may be concerned with the learning return on investment (ROI) generator which will help defray the costs of the software and hardware costs.

I may still have some time to wait for my flying car, but VR is a journey that I can be a part of now.
